MARC O GRIOFA
​

He is a Fellow of the Academy of Wilderness Medicine, a Fellow of the Faculty of Sports Exercise Medicine from the Royal Irish College of Physicians and Surgeons and the principal investigator for Project CASPER which flew onboard the International Space Station as part of the Astrolab mission. He spent four years at Kennedy Space Center as a triage physician and engineer working on the Space Shuttle program. He is a NOAA trained diving medical officer (DMO), Aquanaut, diver and senior researcher/engineer for the NASA NEEMO program onboard the Aquarius Undersea Habitat while also being the faculty dive medicine lead faculty for World Extreme Medicine.

THE CHALLENGE
​

​Plan an experiment that would test the idea of compliant mechanisms in space compatible with MISSE platform and requirements.
​

• The mechanisms and actuator can be integrated or consist of multiple elements.
• The material selection needs to be appropriate for the space environment.
• Multi component designs need additional planning for the assembly method (gluing etc.).
• The actuator can use thermal fluctuations or some other environmental inputs – overall it needs to be passive experiment.
• Also propose a manufacturing technology that would be needed to fabricate your sample.

PRIZE
​

The winner team is going to send their experiment to the MISSE Module of the International Space Station.
​

MISSE provides power, data, and commanding capabilities for customer experiments, tests, and demonstrations. We collect and provide environmental data and monthly photos of deck-mounted items. MISSE is controlled by Aegis Aerospace payload operators from the control center in Houston, Texas.
​ 
We are the only company in Mexico with access to this investigation module on board of the International Space Station.
